Why the name Pescatore? Meaning fisherman in Italian, fishing is Dave’s hobby when he’s not busy with the vineyard or winery. In addition, it is Patty’s immigrant Grandma’s maiden name. Nicolina Pescatore immigrated from Naples in the early 1900’s. Grandma always made her own wine. She even kept a carafe of wine in her refrigerator! Our boutique winery produces only about 800 cases of wine a year. We tend each vine ourselves and the grapes are pressed manually in a traditional wooden basket press.

Popie Wines is a hand crafted boutique winery producing award winning wines. Since 1922, three generations of the Duarte family have worked in the Napa Valley growing high quality grapes that have produced award winning wines. I am the fourth generation Duarte continuing the family growing tradition, here in Placer County, my father (Richard “Popie” Duarte) taught me. 2006 found me completing the cycle, “from soil to bottle”, not just as a grower, but now as a winemaker as well. Over the years I have learned that “wine is truly made in the vineyard”. Our vineyard is family managed, maintained, and sustainably grown, allowing us the control to produce exceptional wines. I am now taking my family heritage to the next step in producing what I hope to be well made enjoyable wines from our Duarte Family Vineyards.

Rancho Roble Vineyards is a family owned winery with deep roots in grape growing and wine making. The vineyards “Syrah Noir” planted in 1999 and “Barbera” planted in 2000 produce luscious fruit year after year. The Barbera grape was selected because of its rich history in the area. The Italian Barbera was originally introduced to Placer County by the 49’ers during the 19th century Gold Rush. This varietal is also particularly well suited to the soils and oak savannah micro-climate of the Placer County Sierra Foothills where Rancho Roble Vineyards and Winery are located.
Rock Hill Winery began in Sonoma County named after a volcanic hillside vineyard with hundreds of feet of dry stacked rock walls. Presently located in the Sierra Foothills of Placer County, the rich soil tops decomposed granite allowing for perfect drainage. Hot summer days and cool nights produce ideal conditions for this world class wine. Drink and enjoy our Wine Country tradition.
Hours: Saturday & Sunday, 12 – 5 p.m.

When longtime Placer County residents, the Mendez Family, broke-ground on their Auburn vineyard in 1999, they had no illusions of simplicity. “We had complete knowledge when we started Viña Castellano, that it was going to be a labor of love, with a strong emphasis on “labor” said Teena Wilkins, the Vineyard and Winery Manager, and the youngest of Gabe and Carolyn Mendez’ four children.
The family’s love of wine is directly linked to some of the strong Mediterranean traditions that they were raised with. “My Paternal grandparents, Mercedes and Frank Mendez were both born and raised in Spain, and although they immigrated to this country as young adults, they never let go of their strong Spanish customs, of which winemaking and enjoying that wine with food was a large part”, says Wilkins. “In Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Greece wine is on the lunch and dinner table to be enjoyed in moderation with food. Although my mother is not a Spaniard, (she is of Irish and American-Indian decent) she and my father married in their late teens and early on agreed to raise us with a strong since of tradition from both heritages.”
It is that link with wine and family heritage that has steered the direction of the 8-acre 2000 case boutique vineyard & winery, lovingly named Viña Castellano. “Viña” is the Spanish word for vineyard and Castile is the region in Spain where our grandparents are from and where we still have family today. “Castellano” is what you would call a man from that region, and so we choose that in honor of my father, whose vision inspired the project.” Wilkins is quick to mention, however, that they strongly considered “Castellana” to honor Abuelita, at 99 years old lives at the vineyard.
In keeping with the Mediterranean-niche, the Mendez Family has planted three of the most popular varietals used in Spanish winemaking, Tempranillo, their flagship grape, Mourvedre (known as Monastrell in Spain) and Grenache. In addition to those grapes, they also have planted the Rhone varietal, Syrah, and the Bordeaux varietal, Cabernet Franc.
