Bob and Sharon Hane are owners of the Pine Valley Ranch, a Christmas tree farm at the end of a gravel drive off Kemper Road in Auburn. The Hanes have spent 30 years cultivated a forest around their home. They now have more than 10,000 trees covering the 16.5 acre parcel.
Cutting your own Christmas Tree is one of the age old traditions that is still possible in Placer County. A fun event for young and old. Just gather up the family and head out to one of your favorite Choose and Cut farms and select the perfect Christmas tree. In Placer County we have a good selection to choose from; Douglas Fir, Scotch Pine, Sierra Redwood and Incense Cedar. At Pine Valley Ranch, one of the most often sold is the Grand Fir, for it's rich green color and sweet evergreen scent.
As Thanksgiving approaches, the Hanes transform their wide carpot into a winter wonderland for their customers. There is a small shop where seasonal arts, crafts, baked goods and hot beverages are sold; a pot bellied wood stove to cozy up to; and display racks filled with freshly made swags and wreaths that perfume the air.
"Christmas tree ranching isn't easy," Bob admits, "but it's a very pleasing thing to do. It's very therapeutic to the senses."
"It's fabulous," Sharon agreed, enthusiastically. "And, the best part is, it's all right here, so we don't have to get in the car and drive to plant or fertilize. And, it's beautiful to look at." |
