Meet PlacerGROWN Hillview Farms

PlacerGROWN recently sat down with Shanon Ousley from Hillview Farms to learn about the story behind producing PlacerGROWN food.

What makes Hillview Farms in Auburn unique?
We have modeled our farm to be Auburn’s local, organic neighborhood farm. We really want our customers to know that they are just as important to our farm as the soil we plant in and the seeds we sow. All of the support that we receive from the community feeds right back into the farm which helps us provide with healthy, locally-grown produce to that same community that we love.

How did Hillview Farms begin?

My in-laws, Jeff and Estela Whamond, started Hillview Farms with a passion for cultivating and sharing locally-grown foods with family and neighbors. Their concern about GMOs and chemically contaminated foods inspired them to provide a healthier alternative for themselves, their family and friends.

In 2012, Hillview Farms expanded their reach when Michael and I moved back to Auburn to help launch a farm stand to provide naturally-grown food at local farmers markets. We now all work hard to continuously provide great tasting produce.

What is your favorite seasonal PlacerGROWN inspired recipe right now?
Our favorite recipe on the farm right now would have to be pan-blistered shishito peppers with sea salt and a squeeze of lemon. It is such a simple recipe that makes for the perfect snack after a long day on the farm.

Directions for Pan-Blistered Shishito Peppers:

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add oil to pan.
  3. Add peppers.
  4. Stirring often, cook until nicely blistered. (About 10 minutes).
  5. Top with sea salt squeeze a lemon over & enjoy.

What do you love about the PlacerGROWN community and region?
We love how much the PlacerGROWN community appreciates real food. Our customers know how hard we work to put the very best quality produce on their plates. Their continued support is what inspires us through long grueling hours on the farm. When it comes to farming communities, we feel as though we hit the jackpot!
