Visit a Farmers’ Market, There’s One Near You

It’s that time of year. Summertime. The weather is hot, the kids are out of school and the Placer County Farmers’ Markets are open! While Auburn and Roseville boast year-round markets near the courthouse in Auburn and at the Fountains in Roseville, several additional venues have opened for the season as well.

“This is a perfect time for Placer County residents to take advantage of all the fruits and vegetables the PlacerGROWN farmers have to offer, said Dave Chappell, PlacerGROWN president. “The products at our markets have such a high level of freshness you just can’t get anywhere else.”

For Auburn residents, the DeWitt Center at Bell Road and First Street is now open every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. until Oct. 31. This seasonal location is in addition to the year-round market held in the parking lot at the Old Town Courthouse from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday.

Brian Selby of Ann’s Orchard in Lincoln is one farmer who said he plans to be a regular at the DeWitt market. Recently, Selby’s eight-ball zucchini and purple carrots were top sellers.

“This zucchini has a better texture than regular zucchini,” Selby said. “It’s a bit unusual but I like to try to grow the out of the ordinary. And this is the second year for my purple carrots. I think they are sweeter than the orange ones, they keep their color and are great in salads.”

In addition to Ann’s Orchard, the DeWitt market features Auburn’s The Baker and the Cakemaker with its artesian breads and pastries, Ortega Family Farms in Loomis with baskets of berries and Renee Charleston of Colfax with a variety of lavender products for the home.

Josh Huntsinger, Placer County agricultural commissioner, said this is just the beginning of the summer harvest for Placer County farmers.

“With the opening of so many markets throughout the county, there is bound to be a location convenient for all Placer County residents,” Huntsinger said.

Carol Arnold, executive director of the Foothill Farmers’ Market Association said this season of market openings has gone smoothly and the farmers are looking forward to a busy summer season.

“Nationally attendance at farmers’ markets is up 17 percent,” she said. “On a local level we are definitely seeing more interest as well. More people are getting the message about the importance of eating fruits and vegetables as a way to stay healthy.”
